Rumors of an iPod / mobile phone combo

Posted by Chris Hardie on August 30th, 2005

If you’re going to be a true Mac fanatic, you have to spend at least a few hours a week reading the Mac rumor sites that churn with gossip about forthcoming products and business decisions from everyone’s favorite technology underdog. The current rumors a-flurry are all about Apple’s forthcoming September 7th press conference, and the possibility that they’ll announce an iPod / Mobile phone combo. Drool.

I’ve been happy with my current phone (a Samsung A500) which I’ve had for a number of years now, and tend not to want to break what’s already working if I don’t need to. But I have to admit I’ve been looking around for alternatives that would better complement my Mac (in terms of syncing contacts, calendars, etc.) and an iPod phone would certainly fit the bill. But with surprising levels of insight, the Slashdot crowd has already given me plenty of reasons to think that one over a little more…

Do you really NEED a music player combined with your cell phone? You’ve been getting along without one all this time. Why the sudden change? I’ll tell you why. Because your mind is owned by the business…”

Will their new cellphone only have one button, just like their mice?”

Imagine some idiot having ~500 minutes worth of ringtones!”

Now I can watch movie clips, read news AND listen to music using my mobile phone. However, every second voice conversation will still run to the lines of “Hello? Hello? Can you hear me? Is this better? Yes? OK…wait, I’ve lost you. Can you hear me? CAN YOU? I’ll call you back. I’LL CALL YOU BACK”.”

And so on. But whatever Apple announces, it’s always fun to entertain a little speculation and dreaming. In reality, I suspect I’ll be taking calls on my A500 for quite a while longer.
