Search Engine Optimization Vol. 1: Meta Tags

Posted by Chris Hardie on June 7th, 2005

Placing your Meta Tags

So now that you have an idea of how to construct your meta tags, how should you implement them into your website? The most common place to put your meta tags is just below your pages <title> tag. This makes them easy for you to find when you’re editing them.

Based on our examples above, this is what the top section of your source code would look like:

<title>Flowers by Evan</title>
<meta name="KEYWORDS" content="flowers, gardening, rose, lilac, lily, violet, florist, arrangements, planting, planters" />
<meta name="DESCRIPTION" content="Providing same-day delivery of flower arrangements for all occasions." />

The order in which you place the META tags isn’t important, however the formatting is. Make sure that you have your quotation marks around your KEYWORDS or DESCRIPTION and that you have quotes around your list of keywords and your description themselves. Avoid using quotation marks within your keywords and description as well, as this will terminate your listing early and some of your words will be cut off.

One question people often have is whether or not to include their meta tags on every page of their site. In most cases it isn’t necessary to have the meta tags on every page of your site unless one of the pages has a somewhat different focus than the other pages in your site. If your site is based on a template system like Dreamweaver Templates, it’s easy enough to place those meta tags in your template and have them automatically included in all pages based on that template so you might as well include them!

That concludes volume 1 of the Search Engine optimization series. Check back soon for our next volume which will discuss the importance of Image Alt Tags. Until then, feel free to post any questions you might have and I’ll do my best to help you out.
